Today was our big day! We have been reading, writing, and learning all about Superheroes for two weeks and today we celebrated with a party.
The students planned everything themselves.
This morning we wore our costumes and prepared for the party by decorating our classroom and getting the games ready.
This afternoon we were playing a game of musical chairs on the carpet when our surprise guest arrived!! It was CAPTAIN AMERICA!
He read us stories, answered many questions, took lots of pictures, and even played outside with us!
After recess we came in and decorated our own cupcakes. Everyone did an excellent job!
There were so many great photos that we decided to make them into a video for you.
Here's what some of the kiddos said about the day:
Eating cupcakes was my favourite - Camilo
We saw Captain America! -Harleen

Lights Out Day
Thursday was a very special day. In honour of Earth Day, Stevenson School decided to participate in Lights Out Day. This is a special day where people all across Canada and the world make a special effort to conserve energy by turning the lights off. You can find more information here.
Because our classroom has no windows, we decided to spend our day enjoying the great outdoors! On Wednesday we brainstormed a list of activities the students would like to do.
The day started out pretty chilly and not all students were dressed warm enough so we made a special visit to the lost and found to make sure everyone would be warm enough. It is no fun playing outside when you are cold and uncomfortable.
Once everyone was ready we went out to the front of the school to "sign in." This is a routine we do every day in the classroom. Each morning there is a question on the Smart Board and students answer using their name. Because we don't have a Smart Board outside, each student chose a special rock. They wrote their names on the rocks and used them to sign in on our "Nature Smart Board."
Thursday's questions was "Which Superhero do you like more?" Captain America or Dare Devil. The students decided on the question, helped to spell the words to write it, counted how many students liked each, and then wrote a number sentence to find out the total number of students at school that day.
Next we went inside the lobby of the school for a little while to warm up and do Discovery Time. Each student chose from designing their own superhero, creating a superhero vehicle out of Lego, or playing superhero bingo.
When we were done everyone went to the washroom (this routine is essential when going outside for long periods of time). Then we grabbed our snacks and went outside for a picnic. We talked about how when we eat outside we eat like a family and everyone stays together until we are done. This was a great opportunity for students to talk to each other and get a little time to rest.
After recess we brought out the capes and played superheroes! Inside, one of our guidelines for superhero play is NO running. Outside they were finally free to run and was it ever fun!
After lunch we came inside to read a book all about birds and how they build their nests. We gathered supplies and went outside to make some treats for the birds. Students used their fine motor skills to weave grass, yarn, and cotton into pinecones. Then we hung them from the trees. We can't wait to see if the birds like them!
Next we learned some new games including Duck Duck Goose, Puppy Where's Your Tail, and Relay Races. Running, skipping, jumping, lunging, and tagging are all activities that improve our "physical literacy."
Then we went inside to read with some older students. Their room was cozy and warm with only the lights from their windows.
At the end of the day we had a special guest reader! Our Star of the Week's Mom came and even brought cookies. They were delicious, thank you!
What an amazing day of learning and fun! I can't wait to add the students reflections on the day.

Nature Scavenger Hunt
Yesterday was a beautiful spring day so we brainstormed a list of things we could search for and went on a scavenger hunt.
Some of the items included:
-bud
-flower
-dog
-butterfly
-green grass
-insect
-ladybug
-hedgehog
-leaf
-squirrel
(Can you guess which one we had trouble finding?)
The students did an awesome job of reading all of the words that we had on our list and searching for each item. Unfortunately we were very busy looking for all of the items and there wasn't much time for photos.

Visits with Tipi Joe
This week Tipi Joe came to visit twice. During his first visit the students learned more about the animals that represent the 7 Teachings. They each got to choose their own wooden animal to paint. Then they painted a beautiful habitat for their animal to live in.
Today's focus was on the tipi. The students carefully followed instructions to draw a beautiful tipi. Then they added details including the horizon line, animals, clouds, grass, etc. When they were finished they added beautiful colours with water colour paints.

Outdoor Challenge Presentation
This morning I was away from school at professional development session. The session was called Connecting the Dots and was about how we, as a community of ECE's, teachers, administrators and trustees, can support students in their early childhood development.
We heard about the importance of physical literacy (running, jumping, throwing, balancing), getting outside in nature, mental health, attachment, and of course PLAY!
I was privileged to speak about my experiences participating in the Outdoor Challenge. The idea is to increase the amount of time that children spend outdoors.
For the last two years I have chosen to take my class out for an entire week. These weeks have been incredibly full of learning, exploring, exercising, and relationship building. There are so many benefits to increasing our time outdoors, for both adults and children.
This year we will be going outside from May 30th - June 3rd. I will definitely keep you posted with more details in the next few weeks.
If you're curious about what this might look like, here are a some blog posts from previous years.

Super Hero Headquarters and Tipi Joe
This morning the students came in to find their very own super hero headquarters! Their reactions were priceless, I really wish I had my camera out to capture it.
Before we played in the centre we created some guidelines. This is what we decided.
Before we played in the centre we created some guidelines. This is what we decided.
We have also been sketching and writing about super heroes during our Discovery Time. Today many students wrote independently for the FIRST time! They were so excited that some students wrote multiple sentences and needed more paper.
During thinking and learning time we decided that we needed masks. The students designed and created beautiful masks. Tomorrow we will attach elastic so they can wear them during play.
In the afternoon we had a visitor name Tipi Joe, through The Integrated Arts program. Today he taught us about the 7 Teachings and did some story-telling. Everyone really loved getting to touch all of the different animal furs. He also taught us about the tipi and set up a real one in our classroom. Everyone got to go inside and check it out.
