Memories of Kindergarten

Today was our last day of kindergarten. I can't even express how proud I am of all my Room 8 kiddos. They have learned so much this year and really matured in every way.

When I asked them about their favourite memories of kindergarten, here's what they said:

Making bridges - Charlotte
The police officer visiting with the gun - Matthew
Me and Landyn and Jolena catching balls at the Children's Museum - Renee
When we went to the Kid's Museum and the zoo and we got to play with police toys. - Yuan
When we went to the zoo and I saw pretty birds and little monkeys with the long tails. -Jolena
Playing with the police toys. - Brodie
Me and Landyn wearing the police costumes and stopping everyone from going in traffic - Parker
It was my first time here and my favourite part was playing in the sand - Landyn
Going on the field trips with my friends - Keane
We played with Lego with our friends - Justin
My favourite part of kindergarten was playing at sand. - Kayden
I liked when we went to the ladybug park. - Isabella
I made friends and I hope Mrs. Lowe's new friends are listening and learning with Mrs. Lowe. - Frankie
Going to the ladybug park - Rachel

At the end of the day we did some more reflecting and this is what we wanted to add:

I loved watching all the kids grow and learn this year! I hope they are always curious and wonder about the world! - Mrs. Lowe

Thank you for letting me grow and learn with the kids. You made me curious again! - Ms. Mitchell

Thank you Mrs. Lowe for letting us bring books home to read with our families.  - Parker

Thank you for letting us play with Lego and discovery time - Matthew

In kindergarten we made good friends - Yuan

We all joined up in a group and did team work and we're all friends in this classroom. We all love Mrs. Lowe - Jolena

We will all miss Mrs. Lowe but we will see her again - Landyn

It is sad that today is our last day, Mrs. Lowe is the best teacher - Parker

We love Mrs. Lowe - Brodie

When we go to grade one we will miss Mrs. Lowe but we will come and say hi to her and give her a group hug - Yuan, Renee, Parker, Matthew

Every time we go to a different grade we will always come to give Mrs. Lowe a hug and say hi and we love you. - Room 8

Outdoor Challenge: Day 5 at the Zoo

Friday was the final day of our Outdoor Challenge. We spent the whole day exploring the Assiniboine Park Zoo.

There is so much to see at the zoo and a lot of walking to get from place to place so I was not able to take as many photos and videos as I would have liked.

I want to say a big thank you to all of the parents/grandparents who came along and helped to make our day a success!

Outdoor Challenge: Day Four

Today was a gorgeous sunny day! The students are really settling into the routines and life outdoors. It feels like we are all relaxing and becoming a stronger team/family.

Some of the highlights of today included:

  • Playing cat and mouse with the parachute
  • Doing a photo scavenger hunt: The students were able to read, find, photograph and check off each of the items independently!
  • Indigenous drumming and dancing outside with Ms. Rempel and Ms. McGurry
  • Visiting Discovery Childcare Centre and learning all about tree with Mr. Wesselius
  • Playing in the Adventure Playground at Discovery
  • Relaxing in the shade and listening to more of the chapter book we've been reading

Tomorrow we will be exploring the Assiniboine Park Zoo!

Please be sure to bring:
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen (applied at home before school too)
  • Water bottle
  • Lunch and 2 snacks
  • Comfy walking shoes
*Please make sure to leave anything extra at home as we will be carrying our own backpacks all day.

Outdoor Challenge: Day Three

Another day of great weather and we got to go on our biggest adventure yet!

This morning there was ground work being done on our playground so we hung out on our tarp and read a few stories. We also played a new game called "Bop It." You'll have to ask your child to show you how to play.

We talked about how today was Kindness Day and what we could do to be kind. We used water and chalk to write kind messages to the students of our school. Check out our Instagram photos to see some of the thoughtful messages.

Then we got out the parachute and played some games before we had to head inside for a presentation from the Block Parents. They taught us about how block parents are there to help you if you are hurt or lost. They also reminded students that they should know their parents first and last names, address, and phone number.

In the afternoon we went for a long walk and tried out geocaching. If you haven't heard of it, please check out the video.  We found two awesome caches and traded some small toys.

At the third cache we found a bit of a surprise. There were some boxes of food and some other items that suggested someone had made the area a temporary home. We had a quick team meeting and decided that we would not like someone to be looking around in our home so we should leave. Before we left, we wrote a kind note and left a flower and one of the treasures that we had found while geocaching.

When I checked the online log this morning there was no mention of any problem at the site (someone had been there yesterday and said it was a great cache). It was surprising and a little sad but the empathy and kindness that the students from Room 8 demonstrated was truly heartwarming.

Please watch the video for highlights!

Outdoor Challenge: Day Two

Today turned out to be a great day. The sky looked dark like it would rain but we didn't feel a drop!

Highlights from today included:

  • A successful shelter
  • Creating our own games with sidewalk chalk
  • Finding a flower to Instagram
  • Geocaching in the park
  • Brainstorming a list of objects that were created by people vs. nature
  • Researching birds we see in our school yard
  • Wondering about sand...is it from people or nature???

Outdoor Challenge: Day One

Today was WINDY but we had a great day anyway!

Here are some of the highlights:
  • Singing O'Canada outside
  • Going to the ladybug park
  • Playing Red Light, Green Light
  • Making our play structure into a fort
  • Reading a story in the fort

In the afternoon we created our very own Nature Bingo game. We thought of ideas that we might be able to take photos of around our school yard. Then we used the iPads and worked with a partner to take photos of all of the things on the bingo card.

You can see some of our completed cards on our Twitter feed!

Tomorrow's weather looks like rain so be sure to dress appropriately. If it is raining too hard, we will go inside.
