Indigenous Drumming

Yesterday we had a very special guest! Richelle Scott our division's new Indigenous Education teacher came to teach us a song and how to play hand drums.

First we listened to her sing and play the drum. Then she taught us the words and how to hold the drums and play them slow, fast, quiet and loud.

Wellness Month - Hydration

January is Wellness Month as Stevenson School.  Each week we will have a focus on a different area of wellness. Special thanks to Mr. McKinnon and Mrs. Havixbeck for planning these great activities!

Families, please join us in these challenges:
Week one (Jan. 11th)   - Hydration Week

We are keeping track of our water intake on a graph.

Yesterday, each student was given a water bottle with the goal of having them consume a basic water intake each day. The Kindergartens and grade 1s have a goal of finishing 1 bottle of water a day. The grade 2 and 3's goal is to finish 2 bottles a day. The grade 4 and 5's goal is to finish 3 bottles a day.

If a student meets the goal, (each day) they will be given a ticket to put in a draw to receive a special water bottle!

We will be teaching students to be more aware of their pee and the colour of their pee. Ultimately we want our pee to be a very light yellow colour, like pale straw. If it is any darker, you are dehydrated!

Ice Experiment

Today we wondered if there was a way to turn our water back into ice. Some students suggested the freezer and some thought putting the water outside would work.

We decided to try both. While we were getting the water ready to freeze we had lots of fun pouring it from container to container to see which containers were the biggest and which were the smallest.

We were a little worried that someone might not realize that we were doing an experiment and wreck it, so we made some signs to make sure our water would be safe.

After school we checked on our experiment and the water had not yet frozen. Everyone is excited to check back on Monday.

We're Melting in Here!

On Monday one of our friends brought a huge chunk of snow in from recess. Rather than sending him back outside with it, we decided to be scientist and observe what would happen to the ice in our classroom.

We put it in a big bin and watched it closely. Throughout the day it started to melt, VERY slowly!

We wondered if there was anything we could do to make it melt faster.

Here are some of our ideas:

Today we got to test them out.

Watching ice melt is serious business!

We here is a table to show what we observed.
