Printing Time

I have to say, I am SO proud of the kids in room 8. Every day we add new steps to our classroom routines and they are picking everything up quickly.

One of the routines we are working on is printing time. Every day, after lunch, we meet on the carpet to talk about printing. Yesterday we made a character named Mat Man. He is made up of short lines, long lines and curved lines. These also happen to be the types of lines that letters are made of.

Today we talked about how to hold a writing tool and we watched a helpful video.

After the video everyone practiced holding the pencil to make both long and short lines. These are the building blocks for correct pencil grasp and letter formation. Having a sturdy grip will help children to write more quickly and easily in the future.

In our class we also do lots of fun activities that help to strengthen the muscles in our hands too!

Using tongs to move objects.
Snapping small blocks together and apart.
Of course, drawing and writing are always good.

First Day of Kindergarten

Today was a very busy and wonderful day in Room 8.

The students learned many new things including:

  • How to walk in a line
  • Where to put their shoes, lunch bags and backpacks
  • How to sign in on the Smart Board
  • How to use a glue stick
  • All the procedures for using the kindergarten bathroom
  • Where to line up for recess
  • The playground rules (rocks stay on the ground, slides are for going down)

They also got to play in the classroom and did an excellent job of cleaning up.

Luckily Mrs. Lowe had lots of helpers. Special thanks to our grade 5 student volunteers, Mrs. Mitchell, Ms. Janz, and Mrs. Macdonell. We couldn't have made it through the day without you!

Mrs. Mitchell is an educational assistant who will be in our classroom most of the time.

Ms. Janz is another educational assistant who works with both kindergarten classrooms. Her role is to support the kindergarten student's math and numeracy skills.

Mrs. Macdonell is our school resource teacher.

Welcome to Room 8!

I am so excited for another great year in Kindergarten!

We are going to do so many fun things together and I can't wait to get to know all of you!

I thought you might want to learn a little bit more about me too.

My name is Mrs. Lowe.

This will be my 9th year of teaching.

I am passionate about PLAY! I believe it is one of the most important things about kindergarten and it is the best way to learn.

I love using technology and social media in the classroom to help students connect with others and the world around them.

This year I want to get better at taking students outdoors and helping them to learn from nature.

In my free time I like to run, go fishing and bake fancy cupcakes for my family and friends!

I can't wait to get to know all about YOU too!
