As part of I Love to Read Month, students are invited to bring in books from home to swap for other gently used books.
Students will receive one ticket for each book they bring in. They will be able to use their tickets to "buy" books.

Heart Maps
Last week we read a book called "My Map Book" by Sara Fanelli. It's a beautiful book filled with unique maps created from a child's point of view. One of our favourite maps in the book was the heart map. We were so inspired that we decided to create maps of our own hearts. It turned out to be the perfect way to combine our love of maps, hearts and painting!
This week we will be using an app called Explain Everything to share about our maps. The app allows us to record our voices as we point to each part of our heart and tell about it.

We can't wait to share our mini movies with you!

Travelling
This week our sign up questions is "Would you rather travel by train or by plain?" It has been interesting to hear about the student's experiences and ideas of what it would be like to travel on a train or plane.
Today I asked the kiddos where they would like to go. Here's what they said:
Mexico - Frankie
Today I asked the kiddos where they would like to go. Here's what they said:
Mexico - Frankie
Philippines - Renee, Yuan, Parker, Brayden
Kid City - Malashia, Kayden
Antarctica to see the penguins - Matthew, Rachel
Ontario - Isabella, Charlotte
Lego City - Justin, Brodie
Mrs. Mitchell - Greece
Yuan's House - Landyn, Keane
Mrs. Lowe - Italy
We remembered that we had seen some books about the Philippine's in the library so Alfonso went to ask Mr. W. if we could borrow them. These books have beautiful pictures and inspired a lot of questions. One of the students asked about what language people speak there. Some of the students in our class are able to understand Filipino/Tagalog but no one volunteered to speak.
Then we thought it would be fun to learn some words together. This video was very interesting and the students had fun practicing the words.
Does your family speak any other languages? We would like to make a book that includes the many languages of our families. Could you leave a comment and tell us how to say "thank you" in your language?
A note from Mrs. Lowe ~ I want to celebrate the many cultures represented in room 8, but I am not an expert. I would welcome any families who would like to visit our class and teach us a little bit about your culture. Please send me a note or email if you would be interested.
Did you know that our blog can be translated into many different languages? There is a button on the right hand side of the blog to change the language.

Winter Walk
On Thursday we took advantage of the warm weather and went for a walk around the school. We used 4 of our 5 senses to observe the world around us. Some of the kids were shocked to find out that we have nerves in our bodies and that the nerves can send messages to our brains!
Using our ears to hear an airplane coming in to land. |
We felt that the snow was rough, crunchy and even sharp! |
We could feel the warm sun on our faces. |
We saw a jet stream getting wider and wider. |
We could feel the wind and see it moving the Canada flag. |
We spent a couple minutes checking out our shadows. |
We also gathered some treasures so that we could look at them more closely when we got inside. |
We wrote down our observations like real scientists! |

Talent Show, Patterns, and ELSA!
This week our sign in question has been, "Would you rather sing or dance?" All of the students have their own reasons for liking one or the other better and some have a hard time deciding. Today some of the students wanted to show their skills so we had a little talent show.
In the afternoon, during our Math Challenge time, we were talking about patterns. The students are really great at drawing patterns but today we talked about other ways we could make patterns. We realized that we can find patterns in dancing and music! Of course the students wanted to do a little show of that too!
Tonight was also the Family Read-In. Many students came to the library to read with their families. We were very surprised when Elsa walked in. She read some stories and then even sang with the kids. At the end everyone got their pictures take and got to bring a book home to keep! It was a pretty magical night.

Sound Story
If you missed it today, the kindergarten students performed their sound stories at the assembly. Room 7 did an excellent job of playing their instruments in front of the whole school and our class showed the video of the sound story that the students made with Ms. Remple.
Today was the first time I had seen the video and I was so proud of their storytelling and instrument playing. Well done kiddos!
Thanks again to Ms. Remple for all of her hard work on this project, it looks and sounds fantastic!
Don't forget, tomorrow evening is the Family Read-In from 6:30-7:30 in the school library. There will be a stories, a small snack, and some very special guests!
