Bridge Adventure

Early last week I noticed some students were building bridges at one of our discovery tables. I asked them to tell me about it and they excitedly told me they were building London Bridge. From there a spark ignited into a full out bridge inquiry.

Our first step was to record our wonders about bridges.

Please excuse the messing writing. Brainstorming isn't always pretty :)
Then we wrote a note to Mr. Wesselius asking for books about bridges. He brought us a whole stack and even recommended a video from the Discovery Education website.

I did a quick search on Discovery and found several more videos about bridges. So far our favourite has been a video all about the George Washington Bridge. After the video the students drew diagrams to show what they had learned.

During our Thinking and Learning Time, many students have been doing hands-on research and constructing bridges of their own. I have been documenting their learning using an app called PicCollage.

Today I announced that we would be going on a long walk to go and see a REAL bridge. The students were actually cheering!! It was super cute to see how excited they were.

Before we left we talked about how to be safe. We each packed our backpacks with a clipboard, paper, a pencil and a snack.

We walked for a really long time until we got to the bridge. We talked about why a bridge would be built there and the students looked closely all over the bridge. We were so busy that I didn't even get a chance to take a picture of the bridge. Then we took a little break from walking and did some sketching.

On the way back to school we stopped to check out some airplanes, run around, eat snack, roll down hills, read a story and say hi to people in our community.

Here's a video about our adventure!

A special thanks to Mrs. Mitchell (our classroom Educational Assistant) and K's Grandma who volunteered to come with us. You ladies were so patient, kept us safe, and taught us a lot. Days like this wouldn't be possible without such amazing helpers!

Here's what the kids said when I asked them "What was your favourite part of our adventure?"
-My favourite was when we were playing on the field and on the hill. -Charlotte
-When Keane was playing with me and rolling in the grass. -Alfonso
-Me and Justine and Jolena were playing tag. - Renee
-My favourite part was playing in the sand. -Kayden
-Going on the bridge. I liked going across it and seeing the river. - Matthew
-I was walking and I was tired and I had so much fun in the field running. -Yuan
-Having the race with Yuan and everybody. -Parker
-Having the race. -Landyn
-Watching the police car. -Brodie
-My favourite part was the car. -Justine
-My favourite part was when we watched the airplanes. - Isabella
-When we saw the police car. -Justin
-Holding hands with Landyn.-Jolena
-Me and Alfonso playing tag. -Keane
-When we played on the hills and everyone played with me. And I liked to run. -Frankie

-I liked running, playing, and walking. -Rachel
-I loved listening to the students talking about all the things they noticed on our walk including leaves, shadows, puddles, where our houses are, and workers in our community. I love hearing all of their wonders and seeing them make connections with their community and the environment. - Mrs. Lowe

Flu Season

This is a copy of the information from the note that went home yesterday and the blog post on the Stevenson Blog.

FLU SEASON

Flu season is now upon us. We have had several cases of the flu already this year at the school. We will be reminding students about practicing good daily strategies to avoid getting sick: washing your hands with soap and water often throughout the day and always before you eat, getting enough sleep every night, being physically fit, and eating healthy foods.

Please continue to teach your child(ren) at home about the importance of these daily practices in order to keep healthy.

You can also go to the WRHA site to find out information about their free flu shot clinics in our area next week: St. James Flu Clinic

Baby Tora Day!

Please note: This was actually a post from last week. For some reason I thought it had been published but it had not.

Today was our first family visit for the Roots of Empathy program. Mommy Margo and Baby Tora came to visit. We are so excited to have baby Tora as our new tiny teacher!

Today we talked about all of the things she can do and can't do yet.

We gave her a toy and watched to see what she would do with it.

We also measured her to see how big she is. We will continue to measure her each month so that we can watch her grow.

Here's what we had to say about her visit.

Mrs. Lowe took 47 pictures. -Justin

She knows how to play but she doesn't know how to hold a toy -Jolena

Baby Tora is so cute and I really want to see her very soon. -Charlotte

We took a picture with all of our friends. -Yuan

We took lots of pictures of baby Tora -Matthew

Baby Tora taught us how to use our manners. -Parker

She is our new teacher - Isabella

She was little - Renee

Baby Tora is so cute - Alfonso

It warmed my heary to see how quiet and gentle the students in our class were. They did an excellent job of making Tora feel welcome and safe in our classroom. -Mrs. Lowe

Healthy bodies, healthy Earth

At Stevenson School, we want to have healthy bodies and a healthy environment to live in.

We can help our bodies and our Earth by walking to school:

Walk to School With Us on Thursday This Week

October is International Walk to School Month
In celebration of this, Stevenson is having its annual Walk to School Day on Thursday, October 9. We will meet at the Rod’s Football field at 8:35am (Silver Ave. and Ferry Rd.). We will walk along the north side of Silver Ave. to the school. If your child is bussed to school, the bus will drop the students off at the field to join in the walk. Staff will be there to supervise students. Families, please feel free to join us in our walk to school. Once we arrive at the school, we will have a brief assembly to start our day together outside.

We can help our environment by recycling plastic bags:

Bag Up Manitoba
Do you want to make a difference in our community? Stevenson-Britannia School has once again registered for the Plastic Bag Round-Up Challenge for 2014. Please send your child to school with as many plastic bags as they can handle for the month of October!

To keep up with all the things happening at our school, please check the Stevenson Blog regularly. You can even sign up to receive an email every time the blog is updated.

Leaf Man

Today we read a book called Leaf Man. We were inspired by Ms. Dowd's class and the lovely book they sent to us, so we created our own leaf people and wrote a book too!

Here's our book

In our class we have been talking a lot about fall and all of the signs of the changing seasons.

I asked the students "Why do you think the leaves change colour?"

Here's what they said:

Because it is fall and the leaves fall off the trees and they change colour - Charlotte

Because it is fall and the different colours red brown yellow and orange. Because the fall is going to change leaves and it will be winter.-Yuan

Because there are veins on the leaves. -Landyn

Because it changes in fall. - Renee

Because they have veins and they have lots of veins and stuff and water. - Justin

Cause they are in fall. - Brayden

Because it's fall and they fall from the trees and they move and turn brown red and orange and then the trees get bare. - Matthew

Because the trees make them healthy. - Parker

Because I saw one that was pink.- Keane

Because the sun came out. - K

Because winter is coming. - Brodie

Because its coming to be winter. - Alfonso

What signs of fall do you see?
