Duct Tape Challenge

This week we have been participating in the Duct Tape Challenge.  Mrs. Lowe found out about it on Twitter.  It was our challenge to make things out of duct tape.

If you're on Twitter you can check out some of the things other classes did by searching #ducktapechallenge or #ducttapechallenge

Throughout the week we did experiments with different kinds of tape to see which was the strongest. We also tried using different types of tapes for jobs around the classroom.

We also watched a youtube video that taught us how to tear the duct tape off of the roll.

Today we worked with our grade 4/5 buddies to draw the design we were going to make. Then we made our designs with paper and duct tape. We had to work together with our buddies.

Polar Bears and Penguins

Today was an exciting day. The students stayed in the classroom during lunch to watch the penguins at the California Science Academy eat their lunch.

We were all sad that the audio wasn't working on their end but it was fun to see the penguins eating and interacting with the scientists.

In the afternoon Mr. Mckiel came to talk to us about his experience with polar bears.

I was so impressed with the connections students made between penguins and polar bears. Tomorrow we will be talking more about the differences and similarities between these two beautiful animals.

Penguins!

In room 8 we have been learning all about PENGUINS! We have done lots of fun activities. Here are some of the things we've done:

We have been watching penguins on a live penguin camera! You can see them too!

We made penguins out of clay - KE
Then we made them a habitat with clouds, snow, icebergs, and water. - KH and Room 8

We read lots of penguin books so we can learn about penguins - KN

We practiced walking with an egg on our feet. It was much easier when we had a "brood patch."

We measured to see if we were as tall as the Emperor Penguin - MS

We used water-colour paints and salt to make a beautiful sky. We cut out shapes to make cute little penguins.  - AD

We made a blubber glove to learn how blubber keeps penguins warm - Room 8

We learned how wax keeps penguins dry in the cold water. - AR

We made a chart to keep track of all the things we are learning. We even had to write on the back! - Room 8

We can't wait to learn more about penguins!

Big Changes in Room 8

We've been making some big changes in our classroom. The bakery has been taken down and a restaurant has been created!
Eating pizza with friends in the dining area.

Taking the orders to the guests.
The students have been busy serving each other, taking orders, creating menus and not forgetting to pay their bills.
Creating menus to use in the restaurant.
Delicious menu items.
The restaurant has also had a new visitor. Mrs. Lowe brought the students a new doll who is very huggable and even has a number of different outfits to wear.  The students have been very sweet and are taking excellent care of their new classmate :)

Beautiful Sky

Today Mrs. Lowe saw this sky on her way to school. She took a picture because it was so beautiful!

Mrs. Lowe asked us "Why does the sky look that way?"

Here's what we said:
Because it is a sunset - Brooke, Julia, Abby, Ajaxx
Because it was almost morning - Piper
Because today is a special day - Mercedez
Because it is really really early - Kiera, Jessica
Because the sun was almost rising - Delilah
Because in the morning the sky changes colour. - Oliver
