Exploring Light and Snowflakes

Yesterday the most wonderful thing happened, we got a message on our blog from Mrs. Babalis' class in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

You can find their blog here.

They were inspired by our blog to make their own symmetrical snowflakes.  They built snowflakes on the light table, the overhead projector and the math carpet. Here are some of the snowflakes they made:

We had never seen an overhead projector or a light table so Mrs. Lowe brought one to our class.

We built beautiful snowflakes with the math pattern blocks and they were shooting up onto the wall!
We noticed that when we put the pattern blocks on top of each other they changed colours.

During play time kids tried putting lots of different things on the overhead to see if the light would shine through.  Maybe tomorrow we could do some more exploring to see which kinds of things let the light shine through and which do not.

Thank you Mrs. Babalis' class for inspiring our learning!

Stick Bug!

A long time ago Mrs. Lowe brought about 20 stick bug eggs to our classroom.  We waited and waited for them to hatch.  Today a stick bug came out.  We saw him standing on the twig.  He was standing very still.

Mrs. Lowe asked us "Why do you think he is standing so still?" Our predictions were:
Because he’s scared – Mercedez
Maybe he’s afraid to see new faces? – Krystal
He wants to be still because he’s camouflage – Kiara
Maybe he’s sleeping? – Ashton
Because he’s nervous of us. - Kyran

We will have to take good care of him. We think he will need:
-water
-food (lettuce)
-a home
-sleep
-air to breathe.

Does anyone have any stick bug advice for us?

Apples and Stars

Today we continued to learn all about APPLES!

We learned that:
  • Apples grow on trees - Kyran
  • There are all different kinds of apples - Jessica
  • Every apple has a different taste - Krystal
  • Apples taste good - Mercedez
  • Apples have a core - Kiera
  • Apples have skin - Annabelle
  • Apples have a stem - Kiara
  • I like the taste of the Granny Smith apple - Piper
  • Apples grow from the crown of the tree - Delilah

We tasted 6 different kinds of apples. We made a graph of our favourite apples.

Kyran was our Star of the Week the week.  He shared some of this favourite things, showed us his pictures and then we wrote about him.

Great job Kyran!!

Popcorn

Today Mrs. Lowe wanted us to practice using our 5 senses. So we made popcorn. We ate the popcorn out of cups while we watched a movie about our 5 senses.

We also wrote a poem.

Popcorn
I see popcorn kernels exploding
I smell popcorn cooking
I hear a popping noise
I feel hot air
I taste popcorn!

"It was crazy when Mrs. Lowe took the plug out and one popcorn popped up." - Piper
"The popcorn was exploding!" - Ajaxx
"We used our sense of smell to smell the popcorn." - Oliver
"We had popcorn to eat." - Jaylan
"The popcorn exploded - Ka-pow!!" - Krystal
"It was fun watching the movie." - Kiera
